The Saint Mary’s Bay Academy senior boys’ basketball team won their season opener 83-63 against the Lockeport Greenwave at home on Nov. 14.

Lockeport’s Alex Dash scored 11 points to put the visitors out front in the opening minutes of the game but SMBA owned the court nailing 20 unanswered points to take a 28-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Although Lockeport played a much closer game, they were unable to close the gap.

Alex Dash led all scorers with a game high 37 points.

Four Stingray players scored double digits with Mackenzie Ford netting 22 points, Josh Peters and Tyrel Comeau adding 18 each and Shayne Clements chipping in 14.

Lockeport coach Francis Scott said this was the team’s season opener and she felt they played with a lot of heart.

“We had a slow first half but the boys picked up their game second half,” Scott said. “We are a young team and there is room for improvement.”

SMBA coach Brad Bright felt the win was a very good start to the season and the level of play was better than he expected.

“The team concept looked to be there and the boys were strong on the boards,” Bright said. “Although we started off slow in the first quarter and slipped a bit in the third, I was still pleased with the overall game.”

SMBA hosts the Digby Mariners this Friday at 7 p.m.
