The DRHS hockey Mariners are off to provincials.
The Digby team won silver at the Division III regional tournament in Bridgewater last weekend, losing only to Par-En-Bas, the eventual gold medal winner.
The Mariners won their first game on Saturday, March 2, beating the host team Bridgewater 9-2.
Later that day they lost to PEB 6-5 in overtime.
On Sunday a rinkful of Digby fans cheered the Mariners to a 6-1 win over Middleton.
Tanner Robinson and goalie Bryceon Wade had big games, says coach Alan Griffiths.
Digby advanced to the gold medal against PEB and lost 6-4, giving PEB the Division 3 regional championships.
The Mariners and PEB will travel to Port Hood in Cape Breton for provincials on the weekend of March 22. There are six teams in the tournament, divided into two pools. They play a round robin in their pool and then the top two teams in each pool play crossovers to determine who plays in the provincial final.
Griffiths says his team has as good a chance as anyone.
“The boys are coming together well and playing team hockey,” he says. “They’re trusting each other. We’ve got some big games from our big players—Tanner, Myles Devin and Bryceon. From everyone really. Everyone is playing at or above their ability level.”
