The Digby Mariners hockey team had a busy weekend as they hosted a Division 3 challenge.

The Richmond Hurricanes came down from Cape Breton, Bridgewater came over from the South Shore and Central Kings came from the Valley for the series.

Organizers now hope Cape Breton will host a similar challenge for Division 3 teams next year.

Digby beat Richmond 5-4 in the first game Friday night, Jan. 11.

Myles Creighton had two goals and an assist in the win; including the winning goal with 19 seconds left. Tanner Robinson assisted on that goal and Creighton’s other goal. He also had two goals of this own.

Bridgewater beats the Hurricanes again Saturday morning 3-2.

At the skills competition Saturday afternoon, Richmond won the team shoot out, their goalie won best goalie and Digby’s Tanner Robinson had the hardest shot, clocked at 127 kmh.

Digby thumped Bridgewater Saturday afternoon 10-2. Tanner had four goals and four assists and Myles had three goals and three assists in that game.

Richmond beat the Central Kings Gators that afternoon with a score of 3-2.

And Saturday night, Digby beat Richmond again 7-4.

Finally, the Mariners’ league game Sunday against the Gators turned into a shootout, ending up with a whopping score of 14-10.

It was 10-5 to start the third when Digby exploded onto the scoresheet with three goals in the first 37 seconds of the period.

It looked like maybe Digby was mounting a comeback til the Gators got in on the action just seven seconds later to make it 11-8. That was four goals in 44 seconds.

Tanner had four goals and three assists in that game, Myles had three goals and three assists again.

Five of the Gators goals were scored shorthanded.

Four or possibly five of the Mariners will be playing in the Valley High School Hockey All Star game in Canning on Sunday, Jan. 20.

Tanner, Myles, Devin  Hubley and Cody Connell for sure. Bryceon Wade has been nominated but not yet confirmed to play.
