The Digby Regional hockey Mariners won one and lost one this weekend.

They beat the Middleton Monarchs 5-4 on Saturday night, Dec. 8 in Middleton and then came home for a 4-1 defeat Sunday, Dec. 9 at the hands of Park View Education Centre from Bridgewater.

Digby’s captain Myles Creighton opened the scoring Saturday night just one minute into the game assisted by Noah Thomas and Bradley O’Neil.

Jajie Alaku made it 2-0 on a shorthanded unassisted goal and then unassisted again he made it 3-0 just five minutes into the game.

Middleton managed a goal before the end of the first to make it 3-1.

The Mariner’s Noah Thomas made it 4-1 to open the second with assists from Alaku and Marco Pernigo.

Middleton and Digby each netted one before the second intermission; Chris Demaine got Digby’s with help from Thomas and O’Neil, making it 5-2 for Digby to close the second.

The third period was all Middleton. They scored twice and pulled the goalie but weren’t able to tie it up.

Just as Mariners led all through Saturday’s game, they trailed the first-place Park View Panthers through three periods at home on Sunday.

Down 1-0 after the first, and 2-0 early in the second, it looked like the Mariners might mount a comeback late in the second when Alaku picked up his own rebound (off an assist from Thomas) and tucked it just around the pads of the Panthers’ Jake Key.

The Mariners had solid chances through the rest of the game but couldn’t beat Key again.

Bryceon Wade also made several big saves to keep Digby in it but the Panthers managed to slip two more by him.

Digby is tied for sixth with the Horton Griffins in the eight-team Valley High School Hockey League. The Griffins have a game in hand as do the eighth place Monarchs.

The DRHS Mariners have two home games next weekend; their last appearances at home before Christmas.

They host the fourth place Central Kings Gators at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 and then the Middleton Monarchs are back again at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16.
