Valley Keith’s wrapped up the regular season Sunday in Digby with a 6-3 loss to Clare Lions, the team they will meet next weekend in a best-of-five playoff series.

Despite the score, the 16 penalties—including five for four minutes—suggest the West Division semi-finals will be a hard-fought affair for the Junior C teams.

Eric Banks had a pair of goals for the Keith’s Sunday, and Devon Bezanson added a single.

It was a game that was closer than many thought given Clare’s dominance in the league this year. In the shots-on-goal stats, the Lions only led 35 to 30, and were outshot 12-5 in the opening frame by the Keith’s.

However, shots in goal are what matter and the Lions scored three times in the first period before Banks got a goal for the Keith’s with 1:47 remaining. The goal, with assists to Colan Cromwell and Devon Bezanson finally gave the quieted fans something to cheer about.

Marc MacIntosh had a hat trick for the Lions, and singles came from Daniel Arsenault, Ryan Gallant and Marc Lombard.

Nick Comeau got the win in goal and Steve Morse took the loss.

Sunday’s game was the second of the weekend for both the Keith’s and the Lions.

Saturday, the Keith’s were chewed up in the third period by the Barrington Ice Dogs, who were showing late season strength and won 5-2.

The Keith’s got off to an early start when Colan Cromwell scored at 12:37 of the first period. The Keith’s held onto its one-goal lead until Barrington scored at 6:25 of the second period.

But for much of the third period, the Keith’s were penned in their end, as the four goals by Barrington proved.

The Dogs continued their winning way Sunday when they handed the Central Division-leading Harbour Crunch its third straight loss, a 4-1 win in Barrington. The Dogs outshot the Crunch 42-27.

Clare Lions also met Harbour Crunch during the weekend, winning 3-1 in Clare Saturday night. Alex Porier, Chris Porier and Mario Blinn scored for the Lions as the Lions outshot the Crunch 39-22.

The Keith's open a best-of-five series against the Clare Lions in Clare on Friday at 9:30 p.m.
