It was the second game of the weekend for the Keith’s who suffered a 10-2 mauling by Clare Lions Friday night in Church Point.

Sunday’s game was more closely fought, with 39 shots on goal by the visitors from Parrsboro, and 37 by the Keith’s.

The Phantoms led 1-0 after one, but three second-period goals by the Keith’s and just two by the Phantoms tied the match. Keith’s goals came from Nik Richardson, Eric Cook and Devon Bezanson.

Each team managed 13 shots on goal in the final frame, but Keith’s goalie Steve Morse shutout the Phantom attack.

At the other end of the rink, Macadam Baird’s go-ahead shot from the blue line passed under a leaping Tyler Robertson and past the defence of Phantom goalie Steve Brown.

With the Phantoms ready to pull Brown for a sixth attacker, the Keith’s Colan Cromwell spun around on a loose puck in front of the net and his goal with 1:10 left sealed the victory.

Robertson picked up three assists in the game, with Eric Banks assisting on two.

On Friday night in Church Point, Clare Lions quickly turned out the lights on the Valley Keith’s, opening a 5-0 lead at the end of the first period en route to the 10-2 win.

The league-leading Lions outskated the Keith’s from the opening faceoff with a physical game and crisp passing to forwards who always seemed to be in the right spot.

Almost all of the first period scoring came within a five-minute span and it was a hole that the Keith’s couldn’t climb out of, although their play was more competitive in the second and third periods, said Keith’s general manager Justin Wood.

He added that Clare’s play is so dominant now that he doubts any team in the Junior C league can beat them.

The action Friday was usually concentrated in front of overworked Keith’s goalie Chris Hersey, who faced 55 shots in the evening match at the Université Sainte Anne rink.

The Keith’s hardly managed a shot on the Lions net through the opening period and managed only 21 shots altogether on winning goalie Colin LeBlanc.

Daniel Arsenault’s hat trick led the way for the Lions, with a pair of goals from Jacques Lombard and singles from Alex Poirier, Ryan Gallant, Marc MacIntosh, Serge McCauley and Roger Camus.

Colin Cromwell and Caleb d'Entremont replied for the Keiths.
