By Karla Kelly FOR THE DIGBY COURIER The senior Mariners basketball team from Digby Regional High School swamped Clare Wolves 97-36 in exhibition play in Digby Friday night.

The Wolves were shorthanded with injuries and, with only five players dressed for the game, were at a disadvantage from the jump ball. Despite the short bench, the Wolves ran with the Mariners and kept the action close in first quarter.

By the half, the Wolves were flagging and fell behind 42-18. Digby exploded in the third quarter, breaking through the tiring Clare defense at will to extend their lead to 77-21.

The Wolves dug deep to make the final frame more competitive, but still fell short 20-15.

Assistant coach Alec Robichaud said the second and third quarters were not so great for the Wolves. “We had trouble getting our shots to fall during half of the game,” said Robichaud. “Having a short bench made for a difficult game.”

Clare has been without its head coach Victor Paskal since December due to illness.

Digby coach Tyler Colwell said the game was a good team effort with plenty of floor time for the bench. “We’re improving and learning with every game,” said Colwell. “We’re trying to be competitive and I am encouraged with the team’s effort and progress.”

The Mariners are at 1-2 in league play with loses to SMBA and Bridgetown.

Joseph Robicheau and Corey Saulnier, each with 22 points, led all scorers while Brian Englehutt chipped in 16 for the Mariner win.

Gavin Robichaud dominated the Clare scoring with 21 points and Shayne Dulong added seven.

The Mariners and Wolves take to the court for league play Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. in Clare.
