Junior Mariners take second place in home tournament

Hantsport Hawks won the junior Mariners’ basketball tournament over the weekend with a convincing 58-23 win over the host team at Digby Regional High School.

Both teams advanced to the final game of the tournament with wins earlier in the day.

The Mariners managed to keep pace with the Hawks in the championship game’s first quarter but the remainder of the match was all Hawks as they cruised to a 58-23 victory.

Brandon Hiltz and Danaan Pederson each scored 10 points for the Hawks while Anthony Hakim and Dustin Howard scored eight and seven points respectively for the Mariners.

The Mariners took on Annapolis Royal Regional Academy in the tournament’s opening game at 9 a.m., and were victorious with a 55-30 win over the Knights.

Anthony Hakim led the Mariners with 19 points and Dustin Howard netted 12. Cody Comeau scored 15 points for the Knights and Nick Mahar chipped in 11.

Hantsport took to the court against the Stingrays from St. Mary’s Bay Academy in the second game of the day. SMBA doubled the Hawks 16-8 in the first quarter, but Hantsport settled into second quarter play and outscored the Stingrays 19-8 to end the half with a 27-24 lead.

Scoring was close in the last two quarters but the Hawks held on for a 54-46 win. Justin Jodrey led the Hawks with 18 points and Zak Guptal had 16 for the win. The Stingrays’ Jordan Cromwell led all scorers with 29 points and JP Gaudet added nine.

SMBA took the consolation game against the ARRA Knights, 62-36.

JP Gaudet finished with 14 points and Nathan Ives added 12 for the win. Cody Comeau led all scorers with 20 points and Nick Mahar chipped in 12 for the Knights.
