A fire truck led a sea of children to the baseball field May 23 for Digby and Area Minor Baseball’s opening jamboree.

More than 100 children turned out for the event and this year they have expanded to include six T-ball teams on top of their three regular teams. Teams are Dodgers, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Blue Claws, Rough Riders, Paw Sox, Mud Hens, Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats.

“When I saw the kids come up from behind the fire truck it was just absolutely unbelievable,” said minor baseball president Sean Brown.

The opening jamboree included the names of each player being read, the national anthem sung by Tanya Dondale and—after their sponsors threw the first pitch—the first game of the year between the Red Sox and Blue Jays. The Sox defeated the Jays 10-4.

Brown noted last year the association had 40 children sign up to play baseball and this year there are 111.

“We ended up having over 70 register for T-ball. I was expecting more like 30,” Brown said. “We’re looking forward to a good year. I hope the kids have fun.”

He also needs one more coach as well. Those interested can email him at sean000888@hotmail.com
