The Lady Mariners from Digby Regional High School were seeded fourth in Western Region Division 3 girls’ basketball league play with AWEC seeded fifth.
The two teams were slated to play each other in the first round of Regional playdowns this weekend at Kings-Edgehill in Windsor. Instead, the first round was played last night at AWEC.
Neither team was able to dominate first quarter play, but the Lady Mariners went on a 19-5 shooting spree in the second frame to open up the game.
Digby continued to capitalize on turnovers and dominated both ends of the court in the third quarter. Although the Wolfpack kept pace with the Mariners to tie it up at 13 each in the final frame, the game was out of reach.
Mariner coach Kim Robinson said she was pleased with her team’s effort.
“The girls ran their plays, were patient, and played a good defensive game,” said Robinson. “The win puts us on a good footing for Saturday.”
Alyssa Oliver led the Mariners with 22 points and Jessica Sabean netted 20, with Kirby Melanson adding 10.
Lindsay Weidhaas scored 10 points for the Wolfpack with Shelley Weidhaas chipping in eight.
The Lady Mariners are up against the number one seed Shelburne Rebels for an 11 a.m. game at Kings-Edgehill on Saturday.
If the Lady Mariners win their first game, they advance to the championship game at 5:30 p.m. or a 3:30 consolation game against either New Germany or Kings-Edgehill if they lose.
“No matter the outcome, we host Provincials March 4-6,” said Robinson.
