Sparked by Kendra Fitzgerald’s 14 points, the aggressive Royals took charge of the court with steals and turnovers and dominated the Stingrays on defence to take a commanding 26-6 half time lead.
The Royals’ Marrissa MacDonald added eight points and Katina Gennette chipped in six for the win.
Laurel Wagner, Rachel Johns, Megan Muise, Taylor Bell and Michaela Raymond scored two points each for the Stingrays, whose coach Darlene Johns said the girls lacked the confidence they had gained in pre-Christmas games.
“The girls seemed to be a bit timid on defence but picked it up second half,” said Johns. “ARRA were quicker pushing the ball up the court, something we need to work on.”
Royal’s coach Grant Dunn said the effort the girls put into their practice the previous night paid off in the game against SMBA.
“We had a good practice to shake off the Christmas break before the game tonight and things are starting to come together for the team,” Dunn said. “The girls did well passing, boxing out and rebounding.”
SMBA travels to Bridgetown today for a 6 p.m. game.
