That was good news for the host Fuelers, especially since the third period often sees the team falter.
The bad news was that the Mariners, who lead the Nova Scotia league, already had scored ten goals, and won 12-2.
The league’s top scorers scored four of the Mariners goals, Ryan Morris, who was a threat even sliding headlong on the ice.
Team captain Kyle Miller, third on the league scoring list, also popped in four goals as the Mariners outshot the home team 67-23.
Though frequently frustrated and cooped up in their own end, the Fuelers earned credit for continuing effort and team captain Eric Cook finally got the team its first goal at 4:55 of the third period, and a second goal was added at the 2:14 mark by Theron Lane.
The loss was the second in consecutive days for the Fuelers, who were shut out 7-0 in Barrington Saturday by the Ice Dogs.
The Mariners’ win was their second of a weekend trip to western Nova Scotia.
Saturday, the Mariners slipped past the Clare Lions, 4-3, despite being outshot 33-20 in the game at Clare.
Clare did better Friday, with a 9-4 thrashing at home of the visiting Yarmouth Mariners, led by a four-goal game from Jacques Lombard.
Mario Blinn added a pair for the Lions, and Nick Knutson, Marc Lombard, and Luc Thibodeau had singles.
