Recent weekends have rung with the sounds of hammers, saws, mowers, whippers and rakes as nearly two dozen parents and children began the clean up process.
Tonia Cromwell, president of the recently formed Weymouth Minor Baseball Association, said old bleachers had to be torn down or readied for painting, grass mowed and raked, brush cut, road repaired and dugouts cleaned in preparation for the season.
Registration for youngsters ages 5-13 was held at Sissiboo Landing with 80 signing up from Church Point up through to Hilltown, Doucetteville and Plympton.
“We weren’t sure how many would come out because we tried it once before without success,” said Cromwell. “I was very pleased with the response we got this time and it seems like the kids are excited to play ball.”
The season will start May 31 and the children will be divided into two age groups, 5-8 and 9-13 for practices and games all summer long.
Cricket was played on the field from the late 1800s until after the First World War and then various levels of baseball and softball were played at the field until 2004. A number of village teams went on to earn local and provincial championships.
