Top-seeded Shelburne Rebels dominated eighth-seeded Ecole du Carrefour Leopards 79-28. Second seed Hants North Flames easily handled seventh seed Dalbrae Academy Dragons 82-56.
Third seed Bridgetown Trojans cruised to a 66-44 victory over sixth seed Springhill Golden Eagles.
The closest game of the day came as fourth seed St. Mary’s Bay Academy Stingrays edged fifth seed Digby Mariners, 66-57. Both teams played a tight defensive first half as SMBA held a slim 30-24 lead at the buzzer.
SMBA took control third quarter working its fast break and forcing turnovers to extend the lead to 54-37 going into the final frame.
The Mariners applied full court pressure to the Stingray offense and outscored the home team 20-12 but SMBA held on to its lead to edge Digby and will take on the Shelburne Rebels at 6 p.m. today.
The Mariners go up against Ecole du Carrefour at 2 p.m. this afternoon.
SMBA coach Craig Glavin said the win for the Stingrays was a team effort.
“The boys played for each other,” said Glavin. “They put it all on the floor tonight.”
Tyler Langford led the Stingrays with 15 points while Jordan Cromwell netted 14 and Patrick Johns added 12 for the win.
Corey Saulnier had a game high 33 points and Kyle Bell added 11 for the Mariners.
Opening ceremonies were held following the SMBA and Digby game with Fiddle Player of the Year Crystal Thibault leading the parade of athletes.
Participation medals were presented to each athlete by SMBA vice-principal Marilyn Comeau.
Along with the SMBA and Digby games today, Dalbrae will take on Springhill at 4 p.m. game while Bridgetown and Hants North go head to head at 8 p.m.
Top seeds advance after first round of Provincial play
