The win put the Lady Mariners in first place in their league with two games against the Island Clippers still in hand.

The Lady Mariners led 26-4 at the half and cruised to a 45-9 finish against a younger and less experienced team.

Stingray coach Darlene Johns said the girls are showing improvement as they put the skills they have worked on in practice to use on the floor.

The Mariners’ win was a team effort said coach Christine Kelly. “Nine girls put numbers up on the board,” she said. “We are improving on offense but will need to tighten up on our defense, especially against stronger teams.”

Nicole Wagner led all scorers with 12 points and Sophie Amirault added eight in the Mariners’ win.

Scoring for the Stingrays were Rachel Johns with three points, and Allison Robar, Bethany Ryan and Kayla Wood, each with two.

In the second game of the night, Digby’s junior boys played a close first quarter with the Stingrays edging out the Mariners 14-12.

SMBA extended its lead to end the half 32-19.

Both teams were even with nine points in the third quarter but the Stingrays sealed the win with a 15-3 run in the final frame for the 57-31 victory.

The Stingray win puts SMBA in first place in the league with the Mariners in second spot headed into Districts next month.

Coach Kelly said the boys are making gains on the floor with a more aggressive style of play. “They played even ball with SMBA for half the game,” she said. “They are gaining confidence and becoming more aggressive with each game.”

The boys needed to tighten up the defense and close off the lane to stop those easy baskets, she added.

Drew Sabean scored 11 points for the Mariners and Kolby Stark added 10.

Nathan Cromwell Ives scored a game high 25 points while Devin Robicheau netted 17 for the Stingray win.

The Mariners play host to Bridgetown for a 5 p.m. game next Thursday.
