The five earned their trip with strong showings last weekend at the western regional championships at Central Kings High School in Cambridge.
The Digby contingent will be paced by Jared Thibodeau, who won both the junior boys’ 100- and 200-metre races.
Andrea Powell took third in the senior girls’ 200-m, and fourth in the 100-m; while Jordan Powell as third in the junior girls high jump.
Colton Farris was fourth in the senior boys’ 800-m and Rachael Gidney captured fourth place in the senior girls’ 3,000-m.
Track coach Kym Roy was particularly impressed with the Digby team’s results at Regionals where it competed among 57 schools and is already looking forward to next season when the track team will be able to practice in the new jumping pit which was constructed just two weeks ago at DRHS.
“I’ve been after that for 14 years,” Roy said. “It’s very important. Now they have been practicing in the gym, jumping on mats. That’s not as good.”
Roy said she was surprised to see the Provincials moved to Sydney—an eight-hour drive from Digby—after years of being in Halifax, a more central location. The change means athletes will need to leave Digby today, Thursday, to be ready for competition that begins Friday and continues Saturday
