LeBlanc, Karrel on top at Clare

Hometown favourite Mireille Leblanc fired a one over par 73 Thursday during the opening round of the NSGA Women's Amateur championship at Clare Golf and Country Club in Comeauville.

LeBlanc got off to slow start after doubling her first hole and carding another bogey on her fourth hole. She settled down on the back nine with four birdies and two bogeys to finish the round with a one-stroke lead over Cathy Donald of Ashburn.

Debi Karrel of Ashburn Golf Club is in first place in the NSGA Women's Senior championship after a solid round of 78. Karrel started her round today on the 10th hole and finished her first nine with a four over par 40, while carding 38 on her last nine holes of competition.

The second round of competition in both championships is being played today at the Clare course.
