Athletes from grades 7 to 12 will compete in hurdles, 100-, 200-, 400-metre sprint, middle distance runs of 800 and 1500 metres, relay teams, shot put, discus, javelin, and long, high and triple jumps.
“We’ve won discus two years in a row and it was the first time it had been won since I was in school 30 years ago,” said coach Kim Roy. “We’re hoping to win districts again.”
With about 20 new athletes this year the team practices four times a week.
“We run around the outside of the soccer field at DRHS,” Roy said. “We have no jumping pits so we set up a mat in the gym and we run in there and jump and we do our throws in the soccer fields.”
The district competitions take place May 20–21 in Bridgetown and then the team is off to Lunenburg for Regionals the following weekend.
Provincial championships are held in June.
For anyone who wants to help with the team’s expenses, “We’re having a fundraiser next Saturday, April 24, bagging groceries at Superstore,” Roy said.
