“It’s going to be a rewarding experience for the volunteers,” says Digby and Area Recreation manager Bob Powell.
“They don’t need to be curlers to volunteer. We’re looking for people for hospitality, drivers, running stopwatches to working in the kitchen.”
He hopes the community will rally behind the event that runs from March 19-26. It is a big deal in the country’s curling calendar and this year’s competition is being held in Ottawa.
Teams from every province including North West Territories will compete in both senior men’s and women’s championships.
Powell said he made the decision for Digby to be next year’s host because he thought it would profile curling in this area, boost volunteers and highlight the community.
There will be eight sheets of ice for curlers, four in the curling centre and four on the adjacent hockey rink. The arena will be closed a week before the championship and transformed into a curling rink, he said.

They will start to make the ice five or six days prior to the event.
The cost of hosting the national event is estimated at $68,000.
“We do get some money from Canadian Curling Association,” said Powell.
He also hopes to put in applications through the province’s hosting program and through other sources.
With the event still a year away, the Canadian Curling Association will provide a schedule at a later date.
