RCMP issued 20 tickets to drivers using cell phones in Yarmouth last week.

Officers conducted a “cell phone blitz”, says Corporal Andy Hamilton, head of Western Traffic Services for the RCMP.

A traffic officer dressed in plain clothes walked along Starrs Road in Yarmouth and reported clear violations to other officers nearby.

The RCMP issued another 23 tickets for motorists not wearing seatbelts.

“Distracted driving and seat belt compliance remain the focus of traffic services with a goal to reduce serious collisions in Nova Scotia,” says Hamilton. “Western Traffic Services have planned similar projects that will take place in Digby and Shelburne counties in the near future.”

Hamilton says drivers should make every effort to pull over and stop your vehicle when using a hand-held cell phone and to always buckle up when driving.

Texting while driving is the worst offender. Hands free phone should be allowed though

So, what about people who drive around with dogs on their laps? They might want to crack down on them too...
