CORNWALLIS – A garbage truck slipped down a steep street in Cornwallis backwards and landed on a lawn.

Sometime before 9 a.m. on March 22 a Valley Waste Resource Management truck lost control on Cote De Neige Drive, one of the four steep short streets between Hillside and Spinnaker, in the residential section of the park.

The truck took out a light pole and landed on the lawn of a house near the bottom of the hill up against a large tree.

About 8 cm of snow fell on Cornwallis on March 21 and the streets were a glib of ice on the morning of March 22.

Stephen McInnis, the deputy CAO and the director of municipal operations for the County of Annapolis, said crews were out and sanding the streets of Cornwallis by 9 a.m.

“Obviously they can’t be everywhere at once but they were actively sanding at that time,” he said. “It was just the wild temperature swings, when it goes from minus 4 to plus 1 and anything we’ve plowed, it leaves a small sand skiff on there and it instantly turns to ice.”

Snow clearance and sanding was the focus of a recent meeting in Cornwallis where McInnis told the residents they need to call him at 665-4543 or 4704 or email him at to report any problems with winter street maintenance.

About the half the garbage meant to be collected that day was left on the side of the street.

Annapolis Maintenance Services has a two-year snow clearing contract for the streets in Cornwallis Park for $12,800 per month.

i sent an email to S McInness at 9.10 am and the roads by then were not salted, i still don't understand why someone who has the snw contract has to call him everytime the need is there to put sand on the roads, this stuff about calling him everything happens here is a non sense, does he think because most of us are seniors we are stupid???
