DIGBY RIVER – A third family from Syria is expected to arrive in Digby by the end of the month.

Stephen Swan, chair of the Digby Welcomes Refugees sponsorship group, based out of the Digby Wesleyan Church, says in a perfect world they’d need about ten more days to get everything in order.

“The house is about two-thirds done and mostly furnished,” he said. “We were told likely at the end of the month so now every time my email goes ping, I jump ten feet in the air.”

Swan says the only big things they are looking for now is a double-sized box spring and mattress (new) and a washing machine.

They picked up a lot of furniture at the provincial donation centre in Dartmouth in January.

And volunteer work crews from DRHS and the Wesleyan Church have cleaning, crack filling, painting and putting down new flooring.

In fact Swan says a work party is planned for Feb. 20 and they have jobs and room for four to forty people.

“Besides we all know the house won’t be ready until I call everyone up and say, they’re coming,” said Swan. “We all know there’s going to lots of last minute rushing around  - our goal right now is take care of as much as we can and try to minimize the last minute confusion.”

The Digby Welcomes Refugees Group is holding a ham dinner fundraiser on March 5 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Digby Wesleyan Church on Victoria Street.

The ham comes with scalloped potatoes, beans and apple crisp for $10 per person.
