BEAR RIVER – Fire destroyed a home in Morganville at the start of a winter storm.

The two occupants of the home, about four kilometres south of Bear River, were unharmed in the blaze Feb. 8. The Red Cross has provided the couple with accommodation.

Bear River Fire Department was paged out to the fire at 12:30 p.m. and called for mutual aid from Digby and Smith’s Cove and Annapolis Royal.

Fire was already breaking through parts of the roof when firefighters started their attack from within the house and from ladders on the metal roof.

High winds fanned the fire, and low temps and then snow and blowing snow hindered the crews fighting the blaze and supplying water.

Department of Transportation crews spread salt and sand for the fire trucks hauling water from the Head of the Tide in Bear River.

Firefighters were at the scene into the afternoon.

The house was a total loss.
