Police were probing the mysterious sinking of a sailboat off Daniels Head Wharf. Cape Sable Island on Friday, Nov. 16.
Shortly after 11 a.m. the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax was contacted about a vessel that had sunk near the wharf.
Rescue officials who rushed to the scene say it appeared the vessel had been abandoned. No distress call was received.
People in the area had been baffled to see a low-flying Hercules search and rescue plane buzzing the coastline throughout the day on Friday.
On Saturday morning the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team was at the scene to seach the sunken vessel. Barrington Ground Search and Rescue members were also conducting shoreline searches to gather information.
Although police were being tight-lipped about their investigation, it is not believed that anyone died in the sinking. Barrington RCMP Sgt. MJ Deluco said there were still many unanswered questions about the boat and its occupants.
"At this point we don't even have a name (for the boat)," she said.
Ground search teams had finished searches of most of the shoreline by early afternoon and were reporting any finds by to RCMP commanders.
The investigation is ongoing.
Sgt. Deluco did not expect the dive team to return this weekend and would not comment on whether there were plans to raise the boat.
