RCMP Const. Patricia MacQuarrie says the two men were in an eastbound car that had just pulled on the highway when a rear wheel on the driver’s side came off. The car swerved across the westbound lanes and into the ditch.

The driver was taken to hospital and the passenger was treated at the scene by EHS paramedics. Names of the men were withheld by police.

MacQuarrie said she believed the car’s wheel rims were alloy and that the lug nuts had worked loose on the one tire. The driver of a following car witnessed the wheel come free.
