Lightning in thunderstorms June 6 hit a house in Freeport and a church in Westport. Between 8-9 p.m. local fire departments responded to the strikes.

“A house down here in Freeport got hit but there wasn’t a fire. The power was out and it made some holes in the wall,” said Freeport fire chief Gerald Moore.

Around the same time, Westport Fire Department responded to a fire at the Baptist Church in Westport caused by lightning that blew out part of the steeple.

“It came in one side and blew out the other,” said Westport fire chief Wally Devries. “I would say we had the fire out in about 10 minutes.”

Devries was impressed with his fire crew and said everything went smoothly and was well organized.

“It was sad though, because three and a half years ago the same steeple got hit by lightning just before Christmas, but it did not cause as much damage as it did this time,” Devries said.
