Two RCMP officers escorted this years’ Apple Blossom princesses into Digby Royal Canadian Legion. Among the princesses is 2009 Digby Scallop Queen Josie Zakhour who is representing the Digby in this years’ festival.
Zakhour was selected as First Lady-in-Waiting on Friday to Princess Windsor, 19-year-old Emily Elizabeth Lynn Rafuse, who was crowned Queen Annapolisa LXXVIII at Apple Blossom Festival ceremonies in Wolfville.
Thursday’s opening began with Annapolis Valley crier Lloyd Smith saying a few words before Digby resident Faith Turner-Anderson sang Canada’s national anthem.

Among those attending were Agriculture Minister John MacDonell, Municipal Relations Minister Ramona Jennex, Apple Blossom co-president Catherine Reid, MLA Harold Theriault, and Digby Scallop Days chair John Soles.
Reid made note of this years’ theme, “blossomed here, enjoyed everywhere,” as she spoke to the crowd and introduced the festival’s board of directors.
Midway through the evening, the Fundy Chorale children’s chorus performed for the crowd, and at the end of the evening Digby scallop fisherman Paul Gidney showed off his shucking skills for the crowd and offered fresh scallops to those who wanted to try them.
As the festival moved through the weekend, the coronation ceremony and concert took place Friday, along with fireworks in Kentville. Today is children’s parade and the grand street parade in Kentville.
