Among those recognizing volunteers in less formal circumstances were the Digby General Hospital restorative care unit which last week took volunteers for supper.
"I like to volunteer because it's nice knowing I'm helping elderly people get around more and what I get back from them, I learn a lot and it's nice to know when they leave, you know you've helped them," said 16-year-old Mark Amero.
"When I first started doing it a couple years ago, I just thought people are going to be grumpy, but they're really interesting people and you learn a lot."
Karly Deveau, 17, said her cousin got her into volunteering and once she tried it, ended up really enjoying it.
"These are kids in our community that are giving back and are doing it for selfless reasons," said recreational therapist Charlotte Frankland.
It makes the experience of being in the hospital better, she said. For example, during the recent Para Olympic events in the unit, one gentleman really took to Amero and it was great to be able to pair them up.
"I think they really enjoy spending time with the younger kids," said occupational therapist Sarah Connor.
Frankland said the care unit has a handful of regular volunteers.
