Wednesday about 3 p.m., Tiverton Fire Department was called to an out of control grass fire and requested assistance from firefighters with Digby Neck and Freeport departments, as well the and Department of Natural Resources. Westport Fire Department was on standby.
“There was a small grass fire on the property and the wind picked up and caught one building on fire, which immediately spread to a second building, which then spread to the house. All three buildings were destroyed,” said Tiverton fire chief Brad Perry.
Within five to 10 minutes after the alarm reached firefighters, the fire had spread and two of the buildings were on fire before the fire trucks arrived, he added.
“We’ve been trying to tell people in our area, if you burn grass, call us. It’s easier for us to be there and prevent it from happening,” Perry said. He urges anyone planning to burn their fields to contact a local fire department and have firefighters on hand.

Also on March 17, another grass fire got out of hand in Jordantown around 1:30 p.m., and Digby firefighters responded first to that one and then to a grass fire in Seabrook.
