It could also provide weather information, said Kenley at the December meeting of the Municipality of Digby council.
Kenley already has a webcam overlooking Digby harbour. He arranged its installation with a company that has similar cameras in Peggy’s Cove and Halifax.
Once the Digby Harbour webcam is broadcasting live over the internet, it will give potential tourists, worldwide, a view of what awaits them in Digby, said Kenley.
The webcam business plans launch a website in 2009 to provide links to each of its Nova Scotia webcasts. Kenley said advertising would provide revenue to site owners.
He added that a live webcast from Peggy’s Cove gets thousands of hits and hundreds of thousands of tourists visit that village. He feels Point Prim is just as attractive as Peggy’s Cove—but travelers need to know it exists.
Kenley says picnic tables and telescopes at Point Prim could help it become a significant tourist destination, but first the lighthouse could use a paint job and the trees surrounding the lighthouse need some pruning.
The Point Prim light station is an operational facility owned by the government of Canada. Linda Gregory told Kenley that council has already written a letter to the government to advise them the property is in need of maintenance but there has been no response.
Chief administrative officer Linda Fraser said the municipality intends to send a letter to inquire if volunteers might be given permission to clean up the site. She said they would also investigate Kenley’s proposal.
Point Prim pitched as potential webcam site
Digby businessman Dean Kenley is convinced a web camera at Point Prim lighthouse would be a ‘tourist magnet’. The camera would capture the rise and fall of the tides, the passing boats, and the activity of seals and whales, he says.
