Burnham seized the opportunity to address the awards dinner and advise people to speak up and lobby politicians if they want to save the ferry service between Digby and Saint John.
Municipality of Digby warden Jim Thurber, town mayor Ben Cleveland, and Digby-Annapolis MLA Harold (Junior) Theriault presented certificates to the volunteers honored during the evening.
Organized by the Digby Area Recreation Commission, the annual dinner is the major local activity during National Volunteer Week.
Theriault said Nova Scotia leads the country in the number of volunteers per capita, and noted that 47 million volunteer hours are contributed each year in the province.
Local volunteers Kelli Janson and Junior Taylor were also honored in Halifax April 12 as ‘representatives of the year’ for the Town and Municipality of Digby.
