At its Feb. 16 council meeting, Russell told them Sept. 9-16 would be an opportunity to promote Nova Scotia tourism, business and investment opportunities in ‘Old Scotland’. Former premier John Buchanan will head the delegation. “The Royal charter of Nova Scotia was signed on Sept. 10, 1621,” Russell said, “so the timing is just right.”

Russell, who has been promoting Nova Scotian ties with his homeland since he arrived here in 2003, said participants can count on an enjoyable experience, but it will definitely be a ‘working week.’

The all-inclusive cost per participant, which includes a gala dinner at Stirling Castle, is in the $2,500-$3,000 range and the group will be traveling on the UK airline Flyglobespan, which recently began service to Halifax.

Russell said it would be ideal if Mayor Cleveland and an additional councilor or two could attend.

Coun. Ron Matsusaki expressed an immediate interest in the 2009 trip.

A delegation of Digby business people and politicians also traveled to Scotland in 2006 and Russell organized a similar visit to Stirling for representatives from Kings County in 2007.

As well, a group of political leaders and officials from Stirling visited Digby last year, bringing with a replica of the sword used by William Wallace, the character portrayed in the movie ‘Braveheart’.
