Wharf Rat Rally organizers will have to satisfy municipal council that the noise produced by a proposed Orange County Choppers show at the Digby airport won’t interfere with emergency dispatch centre operations.

At the April meeting of the Municipality of Digby council, motorcycle rally organizers Peter Robertson and Julie MacLean said the group has successfully landed the California-based show for this year’s Labour Day weekend event, after a bidding war with a Cape Breton group.

In addition to putting on a show, OCC will be taping American Chopper, a television program that draws a weekly audience of 2.2 million.

Digby Municipal Airport is the location most suited to the event, said rally organizers, but councilors and emergency dispatch centre supervisor Becky Doucet have concerns about the noise that could be produced by the show.

Municipal officials are working with Wharf Rat Rally planners to determine if there is a layout for the OCC show that will minimize the noise heard by emergency dispatch operators, and not interfere with their ability to effectively handle calls.

The centre is manned 24 hours a day by staff that answers emergency calls and dispatches 15 fire departments from Little Brook through to Annapolis Royal.
