Residents of Digby Neck and Islands are still waiting for a provincial health department decision on the loss of Islands Health Clinic nurse practitioner Karen Snider.

Since her departure early last month, residents have held public meetings, written numerous letters to government and held a demonstration in Halifax to make it known they want Snider back.

Municipality of Digby warden Jim Thurber met Nov. 5 with the deputy minister of health and says he was convinced the department is seriously looking at the issue. “He is also dealing with H1N1 and emergency room closures and everything else so progress isn’t happening as quite as quickly as I certainly would hope,” Thurber said.

A decision was expected almost two weeks ago, but the warden says he remains hopeful the department will “do their best to get us the result we’re hoping for.”

As of Monday, a decision had not yet been made, but patience is wearing thin. “If we don’t have some positive news by Wednesday (Nov. 18), then a public meeting will be called and we’ll be discussing our next plan of attack,” Thurber on Monday.

He said they would also look at other concerns raised by communities within the district health authority area. “We may be looking for a more consolidated effort as to how we deal with this,” he said. ldelong@digbycourier.ca
