The relay will need a whole new crop of donors because those who volunteered to have their heads shaved or hair cut last year do not yet have hair long enough to donate: hair needs to be a minimum of 8 inches and it cannot be chemically damaged.
Those who do decide to donate their hair typically receive pledges—with all funds going to Relay for Life. Some choose to have their long hair cut; others go all the way to bald.
The hair is passed along to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients.

Last year, Charlotte Frankland was one of eight local people to ‘lose their locks’ at the 2008 Relay for Life. This year, she is hoping that number will grow.
