35 years ago Dec. 27, 1973 – Fisheries Minister Jack Davis said the supply of fuel to foreign fishing vessels would be cut back because of possible shortages in Canada.

Digby fire chief Arthur Handspiker was re-reelected, along with assistant chief Vaughn VanTassel and company captains Joseph Doucette, Godfrey Griffiths and Mason VanTassel.

Bear River native Donald Hardy, 34, was appointed town clerk of Kentville.

The Digby Regional High School band presented its Christmas concert under the direction of D.K. Scott. Manager was John MacDonald.

At the Little Cinema was ‘Mary Poppins’, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. 50 years ago Dec. 25, 1958 –Health Minister Richard Donahoe said Nova Scotia’s new Hospital Plan would not remove a patient’s freedom to choose his own doctor, whichever hospital he wanted or whatever level of accommodation he wanted—although the latter would be at the patient’s expense.

The new provincial hospital plan was taking effect Jan. 1.

Joseph J. Theriault of Belliveau’s Cove was nine years old at Canada’s Confederation, and was still in good health as he marked his 100th birthday in the community in which he was born. He was a boat builder and carpenter most of his life.

DRHS was sponsoring Little League hockey and a high school student managed each of the four teams. ‘Chief Crazy Horse’, starring Victor Mature and Susan Ball, was showing at the Capitol Theatre. 60 years ago Dec. 23, 1948 – Digby Rural High School’s theatre group was commended for its performance at the Western Valley Drama Festival. The comedy ‘Elmer’ was written by Beatrice McNeil and directed by Baden Powell, and the cast included Bill Hutchinson, Marilyn Campbell, Shirley Stark, Carolyn Forrest, Elizabeth Turnbull, Connie Jones, Dick Levy, Madeline Brittain, Keith Alcorn and Pensy Levy.

Pupils at St. Patrick’s Academy presented their Christmas concert, which included plays by both senior and junior students.

Roy Peters was elected first president of the new Digby Curling Club following its formation at a meeting in town hall. Membership in the club was $10 for the year and two dollars for use of club stones.

R.V. Ditmars, owner of Sea Breeze Hotel in Deep Cove, died in Digby General Hospital at age 82.

Ladies heading to the New Year’s Eve dance at the community centre in Annapolis Royal could purchase “party-going evening gowns” at the Shirley Anne Shoppe next to the Bank of Nova Scotia in Digby.

The Christmas Day matinee at the Capitol was ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’, starring Errol Flynn and Olivia deHavilland.
