“If everything goes ahead, we’ll be presented with the deed, maybe even by the end of this year,” says Barry Buckman, chair of the Tiverton and Central Grove Heritage Association.
“The lighthouse will remain in operation but we’ll take care of the property, and if we want to, we can develop something within the lighthouse—like a craft store or a tea room.
“We definitely want to create more parking. The lighthouse is a real attraction for tourists. And we’d like to put in a stone commemorating the Island’s lightkeepers. Some of them served 30 or 40 years.”
Buckman say the lighthouse was closed to the public because of concerns about lead paint last year, but he is hoping the government will address that issue this spring.
A number of light stations are scheduled for divestiture by the government, and Boars Head is on the list.
“We’ve had a community group in place for a while now and that should be in our favour, in terms of it being divested sooner rather than later.
There has been a lighthouse at Boar’s Head since 1864, with the current lighthouse replacing the original structure in 1957.
Heritage group eager to take over light station
The group that has maintained Boars Head light station at Tiverton since 2005 may be playing an even larger role by this time next year.
