Digby Regional High School student Faith Turner - Anderson became the second student to receive the Duke of Edinburgh award Feb. 11.
The award program gets youth active and achieving goals in fun challenging ways. Participants can earn bronze, silver and gold medals.
Digby Annapolis MLA Harold Theriault presented the bronze medal during a school pep rally.
After hearing about the award program though word of mouth, Turner – Anderson said her mother encouraged her to give it a try.
“What I got out of it was a lifetime of experiences. I’ve met new people and I’ve learned new skills,” she said. “For my first expedition I had to do canoeing, not a clue how to canoe and I had to spend a whole weekend canoeing through this whole canal and river and by the end of it, I knew how to canoe.”
With the bronze medal under her belt, Turner – Anderson will next work towards getting her silver and gold medals.
“What I have to do to keep going is pretty much the same thing except the hours of all the activities they do increase, so it gets harder,” she said.
When it comes time to receive a silver medal it could be handed out by the Lieutenant Governor. The gold medal would be handed out by a member of the royal family.
“I’m hoping it’s Harry because he’s my favorite member of the royal family. He’s just a cool kid, he seems down to earth,” said Turner – Anderson.
She encourages other students to try the program because it opens doors and is an awesome experience.
The first Digby student to receive the Duke of Edinburgh award was Kathryn Dugas.
