The fire department already has already raised much of the $27,000 cost of the Jaws of Life, a hydraulic rescue tool that has become essential gear for firefighters.
“The fireman’s day helped us get closer to our goal and we hope to order the Jaws of Life by the middle of August,” said department auxiliary president Cathy Wentzell. “Every time they get called to an accident where someone is trapped in a vehicle, they have to wait for someone to come from Digby or the Islands fire departments.”
The fireman’s day started with over 100 people attending breakfast. There was a silent auction table, bingo for the first time in seven to eight years, barbeque and games.
Firefighters from Digby Neck Fire Department took part in the firemen’s skill competition and first place went to David Raymond, second place went to Melvin Walker and David Lombard came in third during the competition.
Later that evening a dance entertained more than 100 people, Wentzell said.
