The choice was announced recently by the DES Home and School Association committee formed in 2008 to see a replacement for the school’s 23-year-old playground.
As well as playground equipment, plans include a walking track, bleachers, an outdoor classroom, vegetable garden and a BBQ pit, said committee member Poppy Balser.
The playground committee has benefited from the effort that went into creating the nearby Vaughn VanTassell Memorial Park.
That park, which opened last year, received funding support from the organization Let Them Be Kids (LTBK).
“After we started working on the plans, we were approached by Crystal Harris and LTBK and we’re really lucky that LTBK extended their grant to cover our playground as well,” Balser said.
Funding from LTBK will cover half of the $105,000 cost of equipment. Total project cost is $150,000 to $160,000, Balser said, and the official build date is Sept. 25. Balser said many volunteers are needed.
