Milner will turn 90 on March 30 and is known to many throughout the community as a volunteer.

He was a volunteer firefighter for 45 years and fire chief for 19 years. He has volunteered with Digby County Exhibition, his church and the board of trade, said friend Heather Charlton.

Milner also sat on committees such as building inspection, vehicle maintenance, building committee and the Cherry Carnival committee. He was also active with the Bear River Agriculture Society.

“He’s been very active over his life in Bear River. He has been like a grandfather. He’s been a very special person to Michael (her husband) and been a mentor and he’s helped Michael out a lot,” said Charlton.

Charlton said Milner had to move a few years ago to Brooklyn, Queens County, to live with his daughter Karen and her husband, Warren Wagner.

An open house is planned March 27 at Brooklyn Baptist Church from 2 to 4 p.m. and for all those who cannot make it, Charlton thought it would be a good idea to put a card together and have everyone in Bear River sign it.

The card is available to sign from now until March 26 at the village’s Cherry Brook store after which it will be taken to the open house.
