Charles Salmon of Halifax won first place at the King's Shorts Festival of Ten Minute Plays.
His play, The Chair, takes a nostalgic look at the repercussions of an inherited chair from an uncle. The Chair starred Simon Bonnington and Heather Leuck and was directed by Dale Shaw.
First prize was $200.
Janet Godsell of Wellington won $100 second place for her play, A Business Arrangement. The comedy tells the story of a lady hiring a hit man to kill her husband, with a shocking and surprising ending. A Business Arrangement was also chosen for The People's Choice Award as voted by the audiences at all three performances. It stared Colleen Rowland and Robert McCarthy and was directed by Verilea Ellis.
King's Shorts Festival of Ten Minute Plays, was held June 15, 16, and 17 at King's Theatre in Annapolis Royal. Now in its sixth year, record attendance totalled over 500 for the three-day event. Ellis says said it was the best festival ever based on comments she heard from attendees and all eight of the plays presented were worthy of an award.
Theatre Nova Scotia judged first and second place.
The festival started as a theatrical experiment in 2007 and has become a fixture in the cultural life of the Annapolis Valley, this year attracting 53 manuscripts. Next year’s Festival is slated for June 14, 15 and 16, 2013.
