The building’s fire alarm sounded just after 11 p.m. and tenants evacuated the building before Digby firefighters arrived. There were no injuries, and most tenants were expected to be able to return to their apartments later today.
Deputy fire chief Ben Cleveland said the fire appears to have started in electrical wiring in an apartment on the top floor of the three-storey building.
Firefighters were able to quickly gain control of the blaze, which damaged three apartments. Only one was occupied at the time.
Smoke spread throughout the building, and electrical service was disconnected, so tenants were evacuated. Some were able to find accommodations on their own and the Canadian Red Cross arranged overnight stays for 14 people in a local motel
Three other fire departments responded to the alarm because of concern a fire could spread rapidly through the large wooden structure, which was once the Lour Lodge hotel,
The other departments were from Smith’s Cove, Bear River and Brighton-Barton.
