The Home and School Association at Weymouth Consolidated School put on a pancake breakfast for students in celebration of Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 5.
Home and School chair Julie Desjardins said association members wanted to do something for the kids, so Pancake Tuesday—or Shrove Tuesday as it is officially known—was chosen.
A pancake breakfast was something new for the students at WCS and over 150 students and staff enjoyed starting the day off with a plate full of homemade pancakes.
“The breakfast wasn’t meant to be a fundraiser,” said association treasurer Jennifer Benedict.” We wanted the students to have fun and from the response we got, we achieved our goal.”
Principal Larry Kelly said the event was well organized and came with a lot of parent and grandparent volunteers. “That helped make the morning a success.”
The custom for Shrove Tuesday arose out of the need to use up food items such as eggs, flour, salt and milk that were forbidden during Lent. It is best remembered today as a day to make pancakes.
Pancakes were considered to bring good luck as they contained items associated with prosperity and a long life.
