The town is holding a Christmas Light contest this year. (We used a house in the municipality for this picture so as not to influence voters).

The Town of Digby wants to help people get in the spirit of the holiday season and, with this mind, the town is sponsoring a best-decorated homes contest.

The contest – a new initiative this year – gives participants a chance to showcase their outdoor decorations by submitting pictures of their residences.

Pictures will be posted to the Town of Digby’s Facebook page and people will be able to vote for their favourite between Dec. 11 and Dec. 20.

The town will choose two winners based on the number of “likes” on the Facebook pictures, says Susan Rice, executive assistant for the Town of Digby. They will announce the winners on Dec. 21.

Contacted Nov. 20 – the contest’s official startday – she said the town’s events committee felt the contest was a project worth pursuing, a good way to help usher in the 2013 holiday season.

They hope the contest might encourage more people to get in the spirit and decorate their homes, Rice said.

Organizers would like to see the contest become an annual event.

To be eligible for the contest, homes must be within the Digby town boundaries.

Given that they were just getting started, Rice said, it was too soon to say how people would respond to the contest.

The hope is that it will be positive, something to build on next year and beyond.

Contest participants are asked to send photos to townhall@digby.ca by Dec. 10 and to include their civic address.
