Long Island fishermen are wondering when they will be hearing from Cooke Aquaculture. Roger Thomas, a longline and lobster fisherman, read in the Courier in February that the aquaculture company was hoping to establish fish farms off Long Island.

The article said the company consults with local fishermen since it’s important to ensure the commercial fish farms don’t have a negative impact on others.

Thomas says he’s talked to owners of a dozen boats and none have been contacted by the New Brunswick-based aquaculture company.

Thomas says Municipality of Digby warden Jim Thurber told him he understood Cooke was looking at waters near the Long Island area known as ‘The Farm.’ “There’s no way they could set up there without interfering with our fishing,” said Thomas last week. As he spoke to the Courier, there were a number of lobster trap buoys visible in the area in question “Don’t get me wrong,” he said. “If they’re going to bring jobs to the area, that’s a good thing. But it’s also important that they don’t have an impact on our livelihoods. I really want to know more about their plans. So does everybody else.”
