A second huge wave followed the first aboard and damaged electronic gear in the wheelhouse, according to a Coast Guard official at Westport.
Seas were running about three to four metres in winds that were higher than forecast. The ‘Red Sun’ was apparently turning to pick up gear when it was hit by exceptionally large waves.
Westport Coast Guard was alerted at 8:35 a.m., and with following seas and wind, the cutter was able to make the 65-mile trip in four hours.
A Hercules aircraft from the search and rescue squadron at Greenwood was on scene at 9:30 a.m., and another fishing vessel, the ‘Martin & Girls’, was alongside by 10 a.m. and escorting the stricken vessel to safety.
The Coast Guard cutter was alongside at 12:35 p.m., and escorted the vessel to Meteghan where it was secured at 7:15 p.m.
