A meeting to talk about the lobster fishery in southwestern Nova Scotia is being held tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Yarmouth Wesleyan Church.

Topics :
Yarmouth , Barrington Passage

Items that will be discussed include a marketing board for the lobster industry, what’s been taking place in the community to address the fallout from low lobster prices at the start of the season, and how to move forward with stability and long-term planning for the industry.

The organizers of the meeting would like port reps to ask fishermen, crewmembers, family members of fishermen, friends and others from the community, who would be interested in being a part of this process, to attend the meeting. Organizers say a number of businesses in the Yarmouth area will be represented.

Last week a committee was formed, which will try to convince governments to provide help to the lobster fishery and formulate a long-term plan for its sustainability. About 30 people from the business and fishery sectors met in Barrington Passage, worried about the impact on the economy from depressed lobster prices that were paid to fishermen at the start of the season, deckhands being laid off and captains unable to make their boat payments.
