Peter MacKay, minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and the Nova Scotia government a pre-Christmas press conference to announce $25 million in infrastructure funding.
But Theriault says there was no mention of investing a portion of the infrastructure funding to build a section of highway between Digby and Weymouth.
“This part of the 101-Series highway has been neglected for more than 30 years and the people who live near this dangerous road are concerned about the traffic on their doorsteps,” said Theriault.
He said he had received at least 10 phones calls in the two days following the press conference, all complaining of the lack of attention paid this region’s highway.
“This is a real safety concern for a lot of people and now that government has announced infrastructure funding, I think it’s about time the people between Digby and Weymouth get their highway modernized,” he said.
Theriault said he has written MacKay to say building a new section of highway would be a great stimulus project for southwest Nova Scotia.
“With downturns in our forestry, fishery and tourism industries, completing this section of the highway would certainly be welcomed.”
