In a statement Friday, McNeil said Premier Rodney MacDonald should update the province on government efforts to save the 69,000-hectare portion of the province.
“Nova Scotians have made it clear that these significant parcels of land are important,” said McNeil. “Unfortunately, the MacDonald government doesn’t share that opinion. The premier’s lack of leadership on this matter speaks volumes.”
McNeil, who met earlier in March with company president Jim Irving to explore options around saving the lands, said concerned citizens are having phone calls and requests for meetings ignored by the MacDonald government.
“Tens of thousands of Nova Scotians will be affected by this sale and they deserves answers,” McNeil said. “More importantly, the concerns of these residents need to be heard. This government has to stop avoiding the Buy Back Nova Scotia coalition and open a dialogue.”
McNeil wants to know the last time the premier met with Irving officials about the lands.
J.D. Irving Limited extended its sale deadline until May “to give the MacDonald government time to get its act together,” McNeil said. He did not say whether Irving had any buyers lined up after the deadline expires.
